BASEL, Switzerland -- The slimming medication Xenical helps patients achieve rapid and sustained weight loss according to the results of a new study designed to reflect real world usage of Xenical in clinical practice.(1)
The 12 month study of 2430 overweight men and women , was designed to assess the effectiveness of Xenical slimming
pills in patients who are responsive to treatment. Patients who achieved
10 per cent (approximately 16kg) weight
loss after 3 months and maintained this after a further 3 months of Xenical treatment, were followed for one
year. During this time weight loss and other health improvements, such as reductions in blood pressure, were

Patients who respond rapidly to treatment continue with treatment and achieve long-term success."

overweight people with hypertension is almost three times higher than the
number of adults with a healthy weight.

Results from a multi-center clinical trial headed by researchers show that slimming induced by Xenical slimming pills can significantly reduce elevated blood pressure in overweight people.
David Calhoun, M.D., medical director of The Vascular Biology and Hypertension Program and one of the lead investigators, said the results are of particular importance because persistent obesity often reduces the effect of antihypertensive medications.
The study investigated the effect of Xenical slimming pills on weight loss and blood pressure in patients with treated but inadequately controlled high blood pressure. Xenical slimming pills induce slimming by blocking the absorption of dietary fat.
Calhoun said researchers found that those patients treated with Xenical slimming pills experienced a significantly greater decrease in diastolic blood pressure compared with placebo and significantly greater slimming. They also found that a greater percentage of patients who received Xenical slimming pills obtained a significant blood pressure benefit by reducing their blood pressure to a normal level or by at least 10 points.
"In addition to its favorable effect on blood pressure, slimming with Xenical slimming pills was found to produce a significantly greater reduction in cholesterol levels," David Calhoun, M.D., medical director of The Vascular Biology and Hypertension Program, said. Patients taking Xenical slimming pills experienced a tenfold greater reduction in total cholesterol level compared with placebo (sugar pill), and threefold greater reduction in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. Buildup of cholesterol is the most common cause of coronary heart disease, Calhoun, M.D. said. In addition to treatment with Xenical slimming pills or placebo (sugar pills), all patients received a calorie-reduced diet with 30 percent of calories derived from fat.

drug market is Knoll's Reductil. Reductil, a reuptake inhibitor
functions on the brain to control hunger by inhibiting the reuptake
of the neurotrausmitter norepinephrine and seratonin. Sibutramine
functions differently than the diet drug phentermine, which, besides
preventing the reuptake of serotonin, acts to increase the release
of serotonin into the brain, explains a Knoll official. Reductil has

Ms. Coe attributes Xenical's success to its high level of product differentiation, principally achieved by the drug's mechanism. "Xenical acts non-systemically in the gastrointestinal tract, not requiring entry into the bloodstream or brain, to block the absorption of dietary fat by approximately one-third," a Roche official explains. "While other anti-obesity treatments act upon the central nervous system by affecting neurons in the brain to suppress appetite, Xenical acts locally in the intestine to prevent partial absorption of fat by about 30 percent." London -- Xenical slimming pills plus diet and changes in lifestyle habits significantly prevented obese patients from developing type 2 diabetes, according to a major four-year clinical study presented today at the 9th International Congress on Obesity in London. This is the first time that a weight loss medication was shown to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes in an at-risk patient population. The XENDOS trial studied 3,304 obese Swedish patients over a four-year period who were randomized into two trial arms: Xenical plus diet and lifestyle intervention and placebo plus diet and lifestyle intervention alone. XENDOS also is the first large-scale and longest study to examine the efficacy and safety of a weight loss medication.
XENDOS Results:
-- Xenical plus diet is shown to be significantly better than diet alone
in preventing or delaying the development of type 2 diabetes
-- The risk of developing type 2 diabetes was 37 percent lower in patients
treated with Xenical plus diet compared to diet alone
-- Xenical-treated patients also showed significant improvements in
cardiovascular risk factors such as blood pressure and lipid profiles
compared with placebo the placebo treated patients
-- Treatment with Xenical for four years was safe and effective and well
tolerated. Xenical now is the only weight loss medication available
whose safety and efficacy has been studied for this length of time
-- Weight loss, both in the short- and long-term, was significantly

diet and lifestyle intervention alone (-11.4 vs -7.5 kg at one year and
